Preventing and Detecting Gynecologic Cancers
Most gynecologic cancers can’t be prevented, but you may lower your risk:
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Exercise regularly
- Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in red meat and fat
It’s important to have routine gynecologic check-ups and Pap smears (to detect cervical cancer). Don’t start skipping check-ups after you go through menopause. That’s when your risk of many cancers starts going up.
Many cancers have symptoms that may not seem that significant. Women have a way of putting their own needs last. That is a terrible idea. When it comes to looking out for signs of cancer, put yourself first:
- Learn about symptoms you should watch for -- they are not obvious.
- Keep your appointment with your gynecologist and have your Pap test
- Don’t hesitate to call your doctor when something doesn’t seem right to you. You know your body best.
